In cat, the length of the fur is controlled by the gene FGF5 (fibroblast growth factor 5). To date, four mutations have been discovered on this gene.
- M1 is the mutation FGF5 c.356insT
- M2 is the mutation FGF5 c.406C>T
- M3 is the mutation FGF5 c.474delT
- M4 is the mutation FGF5 c.475A>C

Understanding the result of the longhair DNA test
The four discovered mutations are recessive.
It means that an heterozygous cat in a specific mutation is normally not long hair. However if the cat is heterozygous in 2 different mutations, then he is long hair.
