Symptoms of MC – Feline Myotonia Congenita
Congenital myotonia is a muscular disease resulting in a lack of muscle relaxation.
This disease is due to a defect in the chlorine channel which intervenes in the membrane excitability of muscle fibers.
Feline congenital myotonia affects all breeds and also European cats.
Cats with congenital myotonia have muscle stiffness and spasms. Hearing problems (dysphonia) and food intake (dysphagia) are common.
When they move, kittens with myotonia begin to fall sharply to the side.
What is the MC DNA test ?
MC is due to a mutation on the CLCN1 gene.
MC therefore presents a major risk. Indeed, when the cat is intended for reproduction, it is essential to perform this test to be sure that the latter will not transmit the CM to their descendants.
The test does not determine the severity of the CM.
The test is performed using a Swab buccal.
