What is the NCL 5 Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in Border Collie ?

The NCL is a neurodegenerative disease that is found in many animals such as the cow, sheep, horse and human. It consists of an accumulation of lipid pigment in the lysosomes. The first symptoms are observed at 15 months. Symptoms are very variable according to the individuals but the neurodegeneration increases with age. The psychological abnormalities such as aggressive hallucinations or hyperactivity or epileptic crises can also be observed. Damages to the retina of the eye can also be observed. The dogs generally die before 2 years old. The symptoms of NCL in Border Collie are very similar to those observed in English Setter NCL.
