What is the pigeon circovirus ?
A pigeon weakened by the circovirus
The pigeon circovirus is caused by a virus which induces immunosuppression in infected birds.
This pigeon disease is observed only in young birds, usually after weaning between 4-15 weeks of age.
This disease affects about 20% of the young birds.
The pigeon circovirus disease is characterized by lethargy, weight loss, respiratory distress and diarrhea.
The symptoms of diarrhea may be accompanied by vomiting.
An infection by this circovirus usually causes other secondary infections which can be viral, bacterial or parasitic.
The severity of the symptoms depends on the pathogenicity of the secondary infections and the age at which the pigeon contracted the infection.
The transmission of the pigeon’s circovirus is by ingestion or inhalation of contaminated dust and droppings.
The transmission of the virus occurs also in embryonated eggs.
Screening and interpretation of results
The classical PCR is a sensitive and specific method, which makes it possible to highlight the viral DNA present in the feces or in the blood of the bird. This method allows for even more reliable results.
It is best to look for the pigeon circovirus in the droppings rather than in the blood.
The result of the pigeon circovirus test can be negative or positive. A negative result only means that the sample analyzed does not contain any virus. A positive result means that the bird is infected with the pigeon circovirus.
In the case of a positive result, it is advise to quarantine the bird, disinfect all surfaces, and re-test the bird in 30 days.
